Ace | Ruston LA Cakesmash Photographer

Ace with his cute little curls. This is the first time I got to meet this little guy and his momma and we found out we have some mutual friends. I mean most of my clients and I have mutual friends, you can take that to the bank when you leave in small towns. I fill like all there is, is small towns around here even though some people call living in Monroe “city life”. I know that’s probably technically right being “city” but I only really feel cities are places like Dallas, TX or Nashville, TN. Maybe that’s just my thinking.

Well if you’re not from Louisiana or at least one of the southern states surrounding our beloved state, you likely don’t hear the term “crawfish season” much, if at all. But here in Louisiana this is the time that those lil crawdads start getting big and we start catching them for eating. While I wasn’t surprised to have a crawfish boil cakesmash theme, I was surprised to have another one of these within weeks of each other. Hey I’m not complaining, boiled crawfish is one of my favorite foods.

I think the above picture really sums up Ace’s mood for this session. At one moment he was happy and the next he was upset. When you’re photographing babies and toddlers, this is a regular vibe at photo sessions. Honestly most babies take a little while to warm up and I thought that’s just what Ace would do, but he absolutely did not want to be around his cake and just wanted his momma. We learned a couple tricks to get him interested in his cake or at least being near it HAHA! I grabbed one of my toy spoons and started banging it on the boiling pot, oh how this grabbed his attention. I mean wouldn’t distract any toddler?? He immediately repeated that action, quickly got bored and took the spoon and fled. We would repeat that over and over until we decided we needed him to become interested in his cake again. So we decided to actually stick the spoon in his cake and while he did go over to his cake, he grabbed the spoon and walked off repeatedly. Well we tried to get him into the cake but I guess the spoon will do. Totally good with me, as long as I get some pictures of that cute face.

Like all my cakesmash sessions, I do offer some normal outfit pictures as long as baby tolerates it and is doing good. We thought maybe the over stimulation of the cake and decor were the culprit of the crying spells so we thought he would do great for the regular pictures. Well it was about the same. He would do ok and then cry. I always feel so bad in those moments because I know how important it is for momma to get good pictures of her baby and I do have lots of little tricks to help which usually work very well but there are just sometimes these babies are just not having it for whatever reason or another. But he really did well and we got some great shots. I had to distract him with my cute little truck for the in studio shots and then we thought maybe going outside would help too. This helps 99.9% of the time with my littlest clients. What baby doesn’t love to be outside?? They were some gorgeous shots, I love that natural golden light. But of course Ace got tired of that near the end too.

There are so many times when my mommas feel as if there can only be a handful of good photos when a session doesn’t go as planned, but I always tell them “you always get more than you think”. I say that not as an empty promise but total truth. You really get lots of good shots even in the midst of some unhappy moments. This was also true of Ace. He has the sweetest little smile which we captured and honestly I love the little curled lip in the moments he felt overwhelmed too. Because I can attest that those cute crying faces change as they get older and you’ll miss the way they looked when they were upset.

It was quickly after Ace’s session that his momma messaged me and said “He’s already asleep in the car”. Well there you go, little guy was tuckered out! Hey I can relate lil buddy! When I want sleep, I’m cranky too. But I am so glad I got to meet you and get some of the sweetest photos of you for momma and your family to enjoy. And hopefully you’ll enjoy these when you’re older too. Happy birthday Ace!!
