We had a late start scheduling Hudson’s newborn session, mom contacted me after he was born at about a week old and I was unable to get him in till a couple weeks after that. We discussed doing a full posed session but my first available wasn’t until he was going to be 21 days old. Another factor was he was a big boy and typically big babies aren’t as flexible for as long as smaller babies. I got to be honest, I’m not as flexible now that I’m not in my teens and skinny as a rail. My rolls are now fueled by southern dishes made of mashed potatoes slathered with steak and gravy. Forget those cheerleading days when I had to do toe touches, I couldn’t do them well then and I most definitely can’t be flexible to do them now. Think the same for babies over seven pounds. I so wish they were as flexible, because it’s just something about those chubby babies that just get me. We discussed this concern and how posing might be difficult, so I suggested doing a newborn mini session instead, mom agreed so we set the date.

The day arrives and here comes Hudson strolling through my door and I immediately saw his perfect little round head and cheeks. He had a beautiful dark complexion, with sandy blonde hair. Since mom picked the baby option we went to the newborn room to look through the blankets to pick the best color for Hudson’s skin tone while thinking of colors best to match his nursery. Since he was a warm tone, we looked at all the warm toned blankets and settled on this sage green. This blanket has been a crowd favorite lately! With the mini session comes 2-3 poses and I always like to ask my parents what their favorite poses are so I can first try those. If they don’t cooperate in those poses, I’ll pick a different one that baby may prefer and pose well in. Honestly I told Jeannie since Hudson was 8 lbs at birth and already at 3 weeks old, a froggy pose was probably unlikely but I would give it the old college try. Did I put my foot in my mouth! This is the absolute hardest pose for any baby and it takes quite some time for them to get into, but Hudson just popped right into it with not even a whimper. This is why I mention the “unknowns” of baby photography because babies make up their own minds. You can see baby after baby following the same routines and then you have the one who surprises you and makes you rethink everything you’ve said. I don’t think Hudson cried one time and he did every pose that mom requested. I seriously don’t even think he opened his eyes when he was here. He was such a joy to photographed and those cheeks were just icing on the cake. So glad I got to squeeze him into my calendar!
