Amelia’s Newborn Mini Session
When Amelia’s mom reached out, baby girl was already two weeks old. My calendar was packed, and while I never like to push anyone along, sometimes it’s in the best interest of the family to see another local photographer sooner. I always keep a few trusted colleagues in mind to recommend, but mom was set on me capturing this milestone. After a little hesitation, I offered her a spot when Amelia would be around a month old, and we made a plan together.
During booking, I explained the differences between a lifestyle session at home and a studio newborn mini session. Mom was clear—she wanted the classic, posed studio style. Because Amelia would be older, I suggested we focus on swaddle shots, since babies at one month tend to be squirmy and like to keep their hands in front of their faces. With a newborn mini session, flexibility is key, and I wanted her to feel confident we could still create something beautiful.

The day of the session, Amelia came in wide awake and ready to party, just as I anticipated. Awake shots are always welcome—they show off those sweet eyes and little expressions—but a squirmy baby doesn’t always make for easy posing. Swaddling was the best choice for her, and once wrapped, she looked cozy and content. We were able to get some gorgeous shots that captured her personality even though she wasn’t the sleepy, mold-into-any-pose newborn stage.
For the setup, I chose a timeless white backdrop. With just one main color to work with, I wanted something elegant and versatile. Amelia’s rosy skin tones looked absolutely radiant against the soft white, and it gave us the perfect opportunity to add a few subtle accents without overwhelming her. We even captured a few sweet profile shots to round out her gallery, making it both simple and sophisticated.
Though older babies can be more of a challenge, I’m so glad we documented Amelia’s newborn stage before she grew any further.
Every baby’s timeline looks different, and it’s never too late to preserve these fleeting days. I hope her mom treasures these images, because even without traditional poses, they reflect Amelia’s unique stage perfectly.
